he didnt learn from anyone. He just picked up a bass and played what sounded good. Never really studied anyones style

Well, Phil Lesh was no stranger to music when he started playing with the Dead (or the Warlocks back then). He was a very accomplished jazz trumpet player (reminds me of another current-day bassist ). He said that jazz and classical music was a much bigger influence on him rather than the soul/blues players of his time. Phil Lesh is the man.
