Yo.. I'm buying an Ashdown Fallen angel 60 watt all tube amp, and the dude sais it needs a new power amp, so I looked on the site to see what kinda I needed, and I found this;

Pre-Amp Tubes 4 x 12AX7 with DC heaters for low-noise
Output Tubes 6 x EL34 fixed bias

could someone tell me what this means please =]

&& also any advice on where to buy them, what brand & how much they cost would be great =]

Thanks

I'm from Scotland btw so no online stuff =\

Read the sticky entitled "Everything you want to know about TUBES".

Eurotubes ship to Scotland.

www.eurotubes.com

Also, thomann, although it's confusing because they only seem to translate half of the description into English, the rest is in swedish or something.

You'll have a hard time finding good priced valves to buy in any local guitar shop in Scotland, so your options are a) buying them online (which you said don't want to do), or b) take it to a guitar tech, like in Guitar Guitar or whatever is the equivalent in your city. Where abouts are you?

Since you are asking about replacing the valves, and don't really seem to know what you need (the EL34s are the power valves btw), I would suggest taking it to a tech to get them replaced for you. This however will cost you a bomb, but ensures you will get your valves replaced and the amp biased correctly.

For types of valves you want, check the ultimate valves thread here. Commonly recommended EL34s are the JJ/Tesla ones, they are very well made but don't cost you too much.

Hope that helps!

Yes they do international shipping but you will need to pay a lot on P&P and probably tax to boot, not to mention the time it will take to ship them here, which I gather you don't want to wait!

If you want to buy them off the internet first, then have a tech replace them, check out Banzai Effects, they have good prices and are located in Germany, so shipping isn't too bad (it's around 6 euros, so roughly £3-4).

From Banzai Effects (see above) 6 matched EL34s will cost you €67.25 + P&P.

your amp's bias, or current/voltage running through the tubes is at a set amount that doesn't need to be adjusted. so all you really have to do is pop out the old tubes and put in new ones

The bias is the amount of current that flows through your valves. Too little current can make the amp sound thin and cold, but too much can drastically reduce the life of the valves. You need to find the right balance of this to ensure your amp sounds good, but you're not replacing valves every 2 months.

This is all stuff I would recommend you learn to do on your own though, it's kind of part and parcel of owning a tube amp is learning how to maintain it solely on your own, because guitar techs will cost you a lot.

Plus, you can come on UG and act like you know what you're talking about, a bit like what I'm doing

if the specs he gave in the first post is correct. i've also seen somewhere that in some amps with fixed bias you can adjust the bias if you need to, but it doesn't change on its own or something like that. i'm totally not sure ha.

Yeah you might want to double check with "the dude" what the precise problem with your amp is. There's no point in spending €67 on new power amp valves when that's not the problem at all

edit: ^okay, then forget the rest of my post

ha, alright. you said "and the dude sais it needs a new power amp," and i'm just assuming it means it needs new power amp valves, which are what we're talking about (the glass lightbulb things).

but, he could mean that it needs more work done to the power amp as a whole which could cost a lot of money.

did you play the amp? and if you did, then i'm assuming it worked fine?

ha that's good. those are the EL34's you are wondering about. the 12AX7's are preamp valves.

I paid $22 for shipping, and because the dollar is pretty weak then it still came out cheaper than any stockers of JJs in the UK.

Well as a rough guide, I bought 6 12AX7s and 2 E34Ls, and with shipping it came to 73 euros.

Don't worry about the cost too much. I'm willing to bet that your amp takes no more than two EL34's.

That's what I was thinking, 6 EL-34s in a 60 watt amp is insane.

Ashdown, the manufacturer, claims it has 6 EL34s: http://www.ashdownmusic.com/guitar/detail.asp?ID=146

What's weird though is that the head version is only said to have two: http://www.ashdownmusic.com/guitar/detail.asp?ID=147

6 EL34s is more like 150w territory. Dunno how they'd manage to get so little power out of them...

There's definitely only two power amp valves in a Fallen Angel....granted it took me a year to find the emulated line out, but I'm sure about the valves.
