depends on how hot they are, but generally anything closer thatn a couple of millimetres and you start getting detrimental effects.

If you're using a Fender-style guitar you can download their owners manuals - they have some pretty exact heights.
The Laney Thread are big and clever. No exceptions.

I hold my strings at the 24th fret, then adjust the pickups to be about 2mm from the strings. EMG's don't have very strong magnets, so you need them close, and don't have to worry about them interfering with string vibrations.
