scenario: my guitar is ****, it was given to me for free by my cousin, it's basically just been my starter guitar to begin learning on. i've been playing for a few months (i still suck), but now i'm deciding that its time to invest in a new guitar and/or amp (i use a ****ty 10 watt one, hahahahaha everybody please laugh at noobie eric).

question(s): what kind or guitar do i want to invest in, if spending range is $500 plus or minus 200 dollars or so? i need a decent guitar, basically the best all around that a good but not huge amount of money can buy? and how much would this model cost, roughly?

amp? cost? something decent, that gets the job done and has just the basics of what i need. details?

anything else you think i should know?

Honestly, a good amp will do more than a great guitar. I'd rather have an epi/squier with a bogner XTC than a Framus custom and an MG.

with $700, you've got some decent amps to choose from.

One thing that I have to ask, what are your main influences, tone wise? there aren't many versatile amps in that range though, so you'll have to pick: cleans or OD?

haha, anything really.
like, sometimes metal, but not too much cause it's hard haha.
lately, i've been going with blink 182 just for the noobie powerchord and fun fast little intros and solos.
i like Brand New haha.

basically, just a decent all around, non-metallish guitar.

ohh, my cousin has a $2k Gibson Les Paul. I like that, haha, but i don't have that sort of budget. so some sort of cheaper model of that, or something similar?

i would definitely go with an Indiana IS-200 electric, i have one and its amazing for a starter one, i mean its not a typical starter guitar, its really well made, has excellent playability, and its got just one humbucker at the bridge position, thats it.

so its different haha.

i got mine in a pack for christmas last year, it came with a little amp and everything (but you probably wont need to buy a pack) and its pretty cheap, probably around $200.

and if you dont want to get a guitar, then i'd suggest a "line 6 spider 3" 30 watt amplifier.
my dad has one and its awesome, check it out: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Line-6-Spider-III-30-Modeling-Combo-Amplifier?sku=482275

and, its only $200 as well.

^getting a starter guitar after already having a starter guitar is not really worth the upgrade.

Again, an amp first, you'll notice the tonal difference much more.

Also, what really is the thing you hate about your guitar? action too high? not enough frets? neck too thin? too big? tuning sucks?

reincaster, i see what you mean, but its really good for being just a starter guitar.
but JesseLaceyIsGod, if you dont want an indiana, then id suggest gettin a mexican made fender strat or tele.
theyre both nice guitars, take your pic

amp seems to be the majority opinion. ksweeet.

well the action is competing with everest. that's my biggest thing.
there's 22 frets, i'm fine with that.
neck, works for me.
tuning, could be better, but again, ive been able to work with it.
along with the action, the string-pushing-down sucks and is quite difficult, haha.
and then just the sound of it, yuck. probably my amp though?
and palm muting is difficult....hahaha.

would this be made easier at all if i were to post a picture of my guitar? haha.

The way I see it is, it's always easier to borrow a decen guitar for a show, or for an hour or so, but it's much more difficult to actually find someone who's willing to let you borrow their gigging amp.

That's my other question, do you plan to start a band or anything?

haha, the whole band thing.
hmmm.
last time i wrote my own music, it sort of sounded like a mix between a woodpecker pecking on out-of-tune wind chimes, an asian kid making love to george bush's grandma, and a man's howling cries as he urinates glass shards.

^i apologize if that offended anyone. but yeah, my music is not good.

Hmm, I'm gonna take a different approach here; I think you should buy a new amp (Epiphone Valve Jr combo comes to mind, 150 USD, and change out the speaker), and get your guitar set up by a pro. That way you'll have decent tone and decent playability while you save more money for a better guitar. The VJ is very nice by the way, especially for the price and with a new speaker.

Go to the store, and shop around for the best standards. Check out both strats and teles. If you have balls, order a Blem one of Musiciansfriend to save some cash.

Ive played the highway one strat and i really like the feel of the neck. Has nice playability. I dont know about the epi tho. But if you are going to spend that much on a strat, i would reccomend the classic players 60's strat. It is probably my favorite strat I've ever played. Although it is a little over your budget, I think its worth it.
