My friend is wanting to do 2 things. 1 is to replace his tone knob with a 2 way SPDT switch and the other is to replace the neck pickup with one that has coil split. Can someone help me out and maybe just do a cheap drawing in paint to show how to do this? We're mainly wondering about the 3 pole things on the bottom of the switch (what goes where).

O this makes a lot of sense buddy....

Buy a humbucker for the neck with 5 conducters coming from it. I think you can use 3 wired ones for splitting as well though.

And I have no idea what the tone idea is about.

Yeah I really don't know how to explain things all that great sometimes. Ok so what he's doing is putting a humbucker with 5 conductor cables into the neck postition and then removing his tone pot from the guitar. He has a two-way SPDT switch with 3 poles to solder wire onto on it and he's basically wondering where to solder the 2 extra wires from the pickup to split the coil.

He never uses the tone knob so he wants to just take it out and he already has this switch. He just wants to replace the tone knob for the switch. Plus I remember someone on this forum saying that taking the tone knob out of the guitar affects the sound so my friend wants to see if that's true or not but if not it won't matter since as I said he never uses it.

O so he wants to use the switch for spliting? WHy no just use a push pull pot?

+1, plus push/pull pots are usually DPDT

Well like I said he already has the SPDT switch. This is the exact switch http://www.thesourcecc.com/estore/Product.aspx?language=en-CA&catalog=Online&category=Switches+Switches&product=2750603

We need to know which of the 3 we should solder the red and black wires to and whether there should be a grounding wire going to the third.

whack out the multimeter on it to find out what it does. with the push pull option, he can keep a tone control...just the tone will be brighter than when it is turned all the way up as there is still resistance within the tone pot when it is on full
