how dull a title, but yeah, my external harddrive stopped working, and tomorrow, im gonna go take it to a little computer shop in town.
Now my problem is, the files I want to salvage are like 100GB of downloaded movies, not porn or anything, just like tv shows etc....

Now the question is,
a) is it likely he can repair it,
b) will I get sued or something.

Noobish question, I know, but wondering whether it's worth it.

well if the head is broken on the hard drive, your not going to get anything off of it...
but if its just a loose connection or something you maybe could fix it.

oh and you shouldn't get sued unless your computer repair guy is a complete asshole.
I mean most people wouldn't turn in a paying customer would they? Plus I'm sure he see's the warez and crap all the time.

edit: I mean you shouldn't get in trouble unless there actually *was* some child porn on there or something of that nature.

He won't give a damn. He isn't getting paid to get you sued, just to keep his customers happy and probably does similar himself since I'm sure he is the type of guy who is into computers and wouldn't look twice at this sort of thing.

man he probably has stolen more **** off of peoples harddrives like yours then we could count.

I fix hd's at our local big shop, and honestly ive seen the most ****ed up **** on computers, only thing id ever report is **** like child porn or something sick...everyone even techs like myself use ripped off **** so its nothing

do this... shake the hard drive (but dont be too violent with it.) if you hear something moving around in that doesn't sound right then it's most likely trash.
#10
cheers ppl. What it is is I turn it on, the disc whirrs, then clunks at exact intervals, then eventually just stops.
and there's no child porn, just ****loads of dled movies.

Dont worry man, anyone whos intelligent with computers, obviously is going to take the easy way out, I havent worked with one collegue fixing cpus that hasnt had at least smaller forms of illegal stuff, we're just told not to tell customers where to find it online

He doesn't really care. Unless it's something serious, like terrorist plans or child porn, he won't do anything.

If he reports you to the authorities, he is an asshole.
My cousin is a police guy and he asked my brother where he could download music. Irony!

thanks for all the advice/reassurance....anyway, this experience just reinforces my prejudice towards bass players. yeah u heard it. Just cos they're talented, doesnt mean they're not irritating and drop things!
