I've got a nasty buildup of gunk and stuff on the fretboard that needs some attention. What would be best to get rid of all of that stuff, and make the fretboard nice and clean?

Try brushing it off with a toothbrush.

Lemon oil is good. Put some fretboard conditioner on it afterwords.

Furniture polish is no good for your fretboard

It works fairly well on maple necks since they have a finish on them. But not really on anything else.

its even okay to use a LITTLE soap and water. after that, dry it best you can and clean around the fret wire carefully. like someone said earlier, put lemon oil on because that stuff keeps your fretboard in good condition.
