Last night, I was in the mood for some entertainment, so I went on youtube to watch some DJ's do their magic; you know, hear what kind of selection they have, how good they are, any creativity? Well, I came upon a video of DJ Tiesto, who ,aside from being a SHIT producer, is actually a pretty cool DJ, he gets into it, knows his way around a mixer and can scratch decently. While listening to him spin some pretty mediocre trance tunes, I scrolled down to the comments to see what people were saying, as well as to find some good free porn sites. What I found was a bunch of people 'yelling' at a kid who said "this takes no talent, all you have to do it hit play"

And guess what this kid's username was? GuitaristDave (username changed). I was embarrassed to even own a couple of the instruments.
He also asked "why don't you all pick up the guitar instead of doing this talentless crap?"

Come on. This wasn't the first case of this ignorance and blatant disregard for any other instrument than guitar, which, if you compare it to most other instruments, is relatively easy to play (seriously guys, guitars have frets). And this isn't to all of you, just the idiots like GuitaristDave, or whatever the hell his name was, and I'm almost ONE HUNDRED PERCENT sure he goes on this site. I'm not meaning to put down guitar, I love playing, its just you guys need to grow up. And stop embarrassing me.

I've been playing piano for 10 years, guitar for 6, violin for 5, and alto sax for 3 years.

I got criticized by a 12 year old boy while playing Canon in D on the piano at my recital.

He sat down and played that 1-page two-fingered version of Fur Elise.

I sat down and played Brahms #5.

I suggest if we put someone down we should at least rub it in their faces we're better then them.

yeah
i agree with masta bassist
sure guitar is kinda easy though sometimes it isn't
just because its a kewl instrument doesn't mean that other instruments don't take talent

what do you know that qualifies this opinion? i can almost guarantee you have no experience with making/performing this kind of music.

I've heard that name "GuitaristDave" somewhere before.

But yeah. I know alot of close minded people like that and they really piss me off. I definately wouldnt say DJing is talentless, I do imagine it takes less skill than guitar, but still...

Thats why I never read youtube comments, the whole site is full of idiots.

Im a pretty big pool/snooker fan and any snooker trick shot is full of comments like "there is obviously magnets under the table". So I just quite reading them.

DJing just takes a different talent, but its all about taste, timing and technique.

If you had read my post, you would know that that isn't the first time I've seen that. In fact, if you've ever been on UG, you would know that.

I don't really care how most music is made if it sounds good. "GuitaristDave"'s comment about DJing being talentless, and guitar a proper instrument that requires talent is bullsh!t if you compare a great-sounding DJ to a 12 year old who struggles to play Smoke on the Water properly (which is probably what GD is). A common ideal among rock guitarists is that music should be made "organically", with valves and electric guitars, rather than processors. Let's be honest, all they both are is electricity passing through metal. FFS. If what a DJ produces sounds like music, and the music inspires an emotion, makes people want to dance or just sounds interesting, I'm all for it.

I have seen this Smoke on the Water action live at our local guitar center.

He was looking at a BEAUTIFUL White with gold hardware Gibson Les Paul.

He couldn't play the single note SOTW without messing up.

"why don't you all pick up the guitar instead of doing this talentless crap?"

There's also the fact that most people, including me, play music because they love it and won't care about being extremely talented.

now although i am against hip hop/ rap.....i admit DJs are pretty cool (some) but im sure "guitaristdave" was talking about people like the whoever the hell wrote that song that has 4 notes played over and over on a keyboard and they said "girl, shake that laffy taffy" like 100 times and made a million where other bands practice for months and sometiems dont even get noticed no matter how good they are so most rap takes absolutly no talent at all....but i have to admit SOME rap takes tallent but still sucks

Yeah, I was all up for agreeing with his post until I saw that.

Who exactly are you to tell us we embarass you? Even if we do have those opinions, they're our own.

GuitaristDave may be invalid, but the way you went about your post was wrong, dude.

I agree with you, man. But really it's not worth moaning about. It's not something that only guitarists have. You find it with all people that learn a paticular skill, or can do something that others can't do. You get the immature one's or the one's with a low self-asteem trying to big themselves up by showing off and acting like everything else is easy, and their skill takes time and talent etc.

You find this kind of thing everywhere you look in the world, specifically the internet, so I'd either learn to put up for it or you're not going to be a happy bunny for a while.

Don't get me wrong though, I totally agree with you.

No, most rap takes talent, most rappers are poor street artists trying to make a buck at what they can do.

If your entire knowledge of rap is what you see on MTv, don't even bother forming an opinion. Cause it'll inevitably be stupid.

Agree with this. Most radio nowadays is not "rap" it's "shit hop"

listen to Lords of the Underground. THAT'S real rap.

If everyone went by the 'no talent = crap' logic, then everyone's beloved John Frusciante and David Gilmour would be considered utter balls compared to Necrophagist or Steve Vai.

Good thing people don't actually think like that, though.

I do agree with your point, although of course John Frusciante and David Gilmour have talent, they have both a talent for songwriting and Gilmour has a great voice.

Like I said though, I get what you mean.

I find it ridiculous. I've stopped commenting on most of those guitar-crusade posts since it's absolutely useless. I'd very much like to know how much experience of DJing this "GuitaristDave" actually has. Most likely none.

When I read those posts I just ignore them and hope that they, for their own sake, will grow up and realize how immature and ignorant they sound.

I hate it when people say that guitar is an easy instrument. The intonation is quite easier with the frets. But playing isn't.
There's a reason that most guitarists can't play tunes like "Flight of the bumblebee" or "Moto Perpetuo" ,and the reason is that the fretboard is huge, you have to pick each note...
So the fact that it's easy to pick up, doesn't mean that it's an easy instrument.
Guitar isn't less difficult to master than violin.
