I have a 6505 and an ibanez s series and les paul studio. Im really not happy with the tones. After ages trying to dial in tones i cant get what i want, which is basically this sort of sound.

Can anyone analyse the carcass sound and tell what is in there. Obviously its double tracked and there is a bit chorus and reverb which i dont have. My tone is sounding very gritty, unsmooth and brittle.

What are you settings and what cab are you using? I can't listen to the video right now, but chances are that you'll want to turn down your presence, and you might want to try using an overdrive pedal in front of it.

presence does very little
many dials ive tried but commonly

gain5.5 (any higher and its just saturation)
bass 9
mid7
treble 8
presence8
resonance 9

eh, i'm not much of a metal guy, but try bringing all of you settings down a bit.

gain: 5
bass: 8
mid: 5
treble: 4
presence: 6
resonance: 7

Scoop the mids and raise the treble just a bit. Other than that, im not really sure, keep your gain a bit low? It is a REALLY high gain amp after all

i dont like the sound with high mids..i know its fashonable for kids to say 'scoop the mids' but doing so gives the thrash metal tones i like.

Seriously, get that presence DOWN.

Listening to this music, they have bass > treble, and they aren't cutting all of their mids out.

Keep the gain low, and use a distortion pedal in front of it, otherwise you'll get crunchy overdrive.

Gain: 5-6
Bass: 7-8
Mid: 5-6
Treb: 6-7
Pres: 5-6

I don't know about 6505-specific settings.

get a tubescreamer and use andy sneaps settings (google them)

you do know that vid and song has had hours of studio preset stuff put on top - but yeah, start at 12 oclock and use something called EARS, which most people seem incapable of knowing what they are, nevermind using them! hmmm

i thought it was colin richardson

i found that a chorus pedal really enhances the 6505

says he who uses a jackson and a basswood £800 ibanez?. yeah great tones Dafid

turning the presence down has helped a bit, i need to do a bias mod i think

My settings -

Pre-gain - 3.5
Lows - 5
Mids - 7.5
Highs - 6.5
Resonance - 6
Presence - 0

Trust me, turning down the presence helps. Anything past 7 just makes it ear-piercing and buzzy IMO.

What cab are you using?

I have found that the higher volume you go and the lower the tuning, the less resonance you need. When I play Killswitch (who's tone to me sounds similar) in drop C, I have the lead channel on
Gain-6.5
Bass-7-8
Mid-3.5-4 (Believe it or not the 6505 is very middy)
Treble-7
Res-5.5 (Cut it out with the bass up, you will still get plenty of thump)
Pres-7-8

For me, the Pres knob smooths out the overall tone and makes it more defined.
Also, I use my Epi LP Special w/ stock pickups so I compensate for the muddyness of the pickup. Try my settings first, then play with the Res and Pres knobs.

Only things I can think of that you might want to look into are a vintage30 loaded cab, a bias mod (5150s/6505s are biased very cold for longer tube life over a warmer tone), and some JJ 6l6gc's or some SED winged C's for the power amp (both can give you a bit thicker sound).

Or, for a cheaper fix, get yourself an EQ and run it in the effects loop.
