Any type of abnormal glazing or burning on the inside is a sure sign, but it's easier to hear if they're bad. If your output starts decreasing, or your amp is making more noise than it used to, the tubes are probably the problem.

okies =P

I might just get new ones anyways tbh, cos I got the amp 2nd hand, so they probs won't have much life left in them =P

Hey I was wondering where you guys can buy tubes?

Local stores, eurotubes.com (for JJs), thetubestore.com, etc. Just google it.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

...for the gigs im going to be playing its going to be 60% tone and 40% stage look, and I'd like the look of my rig to be able to back up its sound.

no JJ's are not really the 'tube of choice'. its just a preference. you need to research your amp, maybe find a forum about them, and see what other people use in their amps. different tubes can make subtle differences that you may like or dislike, preference will come with time.

to the TS, sometimes tubes will appear bad and you know to replace them. sometimes nothing appears wrong but something really is wrong. and pretty much everyone agrees that any amp bought used is due for a tube change no matter what the previous owner claims.

The most common upgrade for VK's seems to be the JJ's. It's just a matter of taste. I think a better upgrade (more improvement in sound) would be a speaker swap. A lot of VK owners do both.

Thanks "guitardude11" and "uldhppi" I will look into both tubes and speakers.
