hm
so i have a charvel model, with fairly new DR dimebag 10 gauges on, i play every day... i play everyday... my dad has an epiphone casino, he's never changed the strings... and he plays maybe... 2 times a week... so i play his guitar whenever im in the living room, since he keeps it there.... and when im playing it, his strings feel... dirty... and ive cleaned them numerous times...
i was wondering if its just the strings, or is it dirt? idk what kind of strings he has, he hasnt changed them from the ones he got off of epiphone.com

and is it a problem with tone, tuning, or just the overall sound?

Its rust.
It does affect your tone IMO(making for a duller sound). String breakage will be more common. Tuning shouldn't be affected though. It just feels like crap though.

Rusted/old strings does affect your tone. Personally, i prefer the tone more after a week old, or two.

Changing strings is easy.

^I'd let a pro look at it. Once you get into the technicalities of screws...well, it's just a place you don't want to be, friend.

i don't get what the deal is with people not changing strings til they break. IMO fresh strings sound the best, and might as well get elixirs as they last ages.
