Wow I thread I created has been resurrected .
To whoever asked - Look for my review of the Wizard Wah in the Ultimate Wah Thread.
I'll also put the US prices in the first post.

The screamer will do alexisonfire no problem it's quite disgustingly versatile.

The valves in my ENGL have gone, Im gonna replace them with JJs in the pre and Solvtecs in the power/output. Sound like a good plan?

I'm thinking about a Fireball, how does that amp stack up against the other high gain amps.
#50
^ depends, what type of tone are you after? and how much versatility? EDIT: also, which country are you from? that'll affect relative value too.

I think dave is the Saint of this thread (obviously I'm god as "the creator" :p.

Anyways, the thunder isn't that great for metal, it's more of a rock amp than a metal amp. The screamer would be the better choice if you can afford it. The sound of a thunder is quite modern but depending on your guitar and how you EQ it you can make it sound very AC/DC and Black Sabbath.

Fireballs are very good for Metal but they're not very versatile so if you want to play a lot of different stuff I'd look elsewhere.

As dave mentioned, where you are will affect value for money.

^ (i'd also add that fireballs are good for the modern melodeath type of metal- for power metal a powerball is probably better, while for 80s metal, a blackmore/savage/SE depending on budget would be a better call )

Hey guys, i would like a description of a few of these amps. Brightness/darkness, smoothness, liquid gain, gain, bottom end, tightness, articulation.....those are the things i'd like commenting on.

The amps i would like described are the Fireball, Powerball, Savage, Invader, SE

Thanks a lot, i know its a lot but i would just like to know more about these bad-boys.

^^ ok, fireball is probably the darkest. fendery cleans, death-metal/melodeath style distortion channel. not really anything in-between, without pedals anyway.

smoothness... i'd say my savage se is the smoothest one i've tried. it's discontinued, of course. the savage and invader might be smooth, but i haven't tried those. the blackmore is pretty smooth. the SE can be dialled in to be smooth.

liquid gain: probably powerball and SE. savage (based on my savage se) just about getting there if you dime the gain.

Gain: powerball has the most, closely followed by SE.

Bottom end: probably powerball. SE has quite a bit too. Maybe fireball too.

Tightness: they're all pretty tight, but the powerball or SE are probably tightest.

Those are based on the ones I've tried (i haven't tried the invader, non-SE Savage, sovereign or thunder), and from what I can remember. and also based on the limitations when i tried them (some at low volumes).

^ thanks a lot man. So i guess the amp i would be looking for would be the powerball.....which would be in a very long time, but i just wanted to know a little more about these amps.

Thanks Dave

bear in mind, different people will feel slightly differently about each of them... i've heard of metal guys on forums whose favourite engl is the blackmore, for example.

i might be trading in all my amps for an invader. Im not too keen on the others below that price bracket..powerball a bit compressed and saturated sounding. However i want a dark sound not bright so was trying to research whether a mod like on the 5150s would be possible. That would be my ultimate amp.

I own it. And you asked for settings in the first post of thread, and you can quite clearly see them in the pic.
I play deathmetal, metalcore etc. and this amp is definitely brutal enough.

Luckyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

How do you like it (I know you said you love it but more in depth)?

What footswitch do you have?

I bought the Z-5 and I love it, the amp just wouldnt be the same without it.
#68
Pffft
As if you would buy a footswitch. I made my own for about $40 bucks. It's pretty much two Z-4s combined, so thats a saving of about $350 Aus

I got mine for 40% off during a sale. Plus it looks damn sexy next to the amp. I figured I could have built one but I would much rather spend a little money and have a really nice foot switch that is virtually indestructible and is designed specifically for their amps, from a function and design point of view.

Hey all!

I'm thinking of going with an Engl as my next amp (seeing as I can't afford Mesa.. ) and was wondering which you would recommend for more Hardcore/Metalcore kind of stuff. Price range is around $1500 USD. (This would include a cabinet if the recommended amp is a head!) Also, which cabinet would you recommend (preferably a 2x12, don't really need a 4x12. Heard good things of Vader?)

More in depth description of what I play would be : As I Lay Dying, It Dies Today, Before Their Eyes, Haste the Day etc..

Thanks!

I don't have an engl, but just so you know, they raised their prices, so you may want to edit in the newer ones into the first post.

I really dug the Blackmore I had, pretty killer amp. Even handled my 7 string ok, which some of the more versatile amps don't seem to handle as well in the lowend. I'm DYING to try a Savage, I think I would really like that beast from the clips, friends that own one, and previously owning the Blackmore.

^ haven't ever got round to trying a thunder...

Best make clear that footswitches are extra (cheapos at engl.. )

US pricing at www.rocksolidamps.com - better also make clear that in the US you have a lot of other options at similar or even cheaper prices. whereas in europe engl are pretty reasonably priced.

Other options? Do tell, dave. :P

I'm still thinking if ENGL's the way to go for me, and if so, it's between the richie blackmore head or the fireball head.

Has anyone tried both out?
