First off I don't have any link to a sound clip or anything so I'm hoping at least someone is familiar with Rooted Shadows by UneXpect and if not I'll attempt to upload it somewhere. Also if this is in the wrong section let me know.

My question relating to this song is whether or not that's a guitar making those weird sounds in the beginning or the keyboard/synth thing. If it is a guitar what kinds of pedals, tricks, etc. would you use to make those sounds?

Sounds like a guitar with a strong fuzz, and possibly also a sustainer to let it ring out for so long. In some parts it seems that there's some flanging on it.

There are some "octave up" fuzzes which produce that sound, and they are commonly mistaken for synthesizers.

So if I were to go about re-creating that sound or at least getting close what would I need exactly?

Edit: Sound clip here: http://media.putfile.com/Rooted-Shadows---UneXpect
First 1:20 of it.
