Will buying a sound card for my laptop (I've been looking at the Creative Audigy 2 ZS Notebook) improve the performance of my laptop when dealing with lots of audio processing? (ie. when I'm using my DAW). Does it actually take any of the load off the main processor?

Thanks

EDIT: and will it reduce latency?

it will help everything out a little and help with latency but you should also get a good processor and upgrade ram if you can.

if you just want to bypass getting a sound upgrade for the laptop you could go with an interface like a Toneport.
it bypasses the sound card for recording and you'll have little/no latency

ah, ok. So if I had a seperate USB device for recording, the soundcard wouldn't be involved at all. Thanks Moody

Another thing i was after was reducing the latency of MIDI intruments.
I have a USB MIDI keyboard that I use ocassionally, and the input from the keyboard to the laptop is almost instaneous. Unfortunately, there's a very noticable delay between the laptop getting the MIDI input and actually giving an audio output (which is enough to make it very difficult to play anything in time). Is this something a soundcard would improve? and would the improvement be any more than minimal?

It wouldn't actually help your performance with processing and mixing and stuff, unless it's one of those interfaces with built in effects. It will make the raw tracks sound better though.
If you could blow up the world with a flick of a switch,
Would you do it?

If you could make everybody poor just so you could be rich,
Would you do it?

With all your power,
What would you do?

For your latency problems it's best to upgrade your computer with at least 2GB RAM and if needed, a better processor.
