It just occurred to me that UG attracts a lot of socially isolated male teenagers with questionable psychological dispositions.

Hair metal sucks. If you mean actual metal, there's the obvious Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and the Big 4 of Thrash Metal (Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth). Want more? There's a Recommendation Thread in the metal forum.

No one commented on Priest yet!!!! Judas Priest =]

Iron Maiden are THE most overrated band to come out of the 80s.

All their songs use very similar chord progressions and the guitarists are not very creative when it comes to soloing.

The only thing good about them is their live show which ive heard is supposed to be extremely good.

EDIT: Try Helloween if you like Maiden

For hair metal i would recomend Ratt, Dokken, Winger, and White Lion. For thrash you can't really go wrong with the big 4 (Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer) or Exodus, Testament and Death Angel also check out Guns N Roses, Motley Crue, Van Halen, David Lee Roth and Whitesnake. If you REALLY like hair metal bands try and find some 80s Pantera its very funny
my band Crimson Angel

PM me if you're interested in drumming for us

There is some good metal from the 80's(thrash, death, power) but if you are talking about Glam being 80's metal then stay away from it. Thats not even metal in my opinion.

Kill 'em All by Metallica is a good starter album for thrash metal.

When you need something a bit...er...heavier, Slayer's Reign in Blood is always good.

Following that progression, death metal and German thrash should be moar accessible for ye.

some of these bands were mainly popular in the early 90s, before the grunge killed em, but they started in the 80s.
Skid Row, Slaughter, Ratt, quiet riot, etc.
