I have a defretted bass neck that I'm going to finish with tung oil, and I recently sanded the back finish off it for that smooth feel. How should I go about applying the tung oil? dab it on with a paper towel and let it dry before adding more? How many coats are necessary to do the job?

There are some things in life that are universally "good":

Sex, pizza, the smell of fresh washing and slap bass.
You can use natural or synthetic bristle brush ... paper towel won't give you that level of control.

4 or so coats at 1 coat per day should be fine. Make sure it's the pure or 100% Tung Oil, without the additives or hardeners ... at least that's what a luthier told me.

Tip: When re-capping your Tung Oil container, remove as much of the air by displacing the free space with inert objects like glass marbles, etc.
