i was wondering if i should cut the neck and angled headstock from one thick maple blank, or cut the head stock from another piece and use a scarf joint? which would be stronger? i imagine a thicker blank would be more expensive? which way should i go?

Well unless you have a pretty big piece of maple, then sometimes the only way to have an angled headstock is by adding another piece of wood. Using a scarf joint and some good strong glue and clamps, that method would actaully be stronger then one piece.
If your comfortable making a scarf joint, then I would defintally go that route.
