I'm trying out for my high school's rock band soon. Can anybody help me out with a good song?

I'm a guitarist who's somewhere inbetween intermediate and advanced. I need a song that shows off my skills, but isn't insanely hard, can be picked up without TOO much work, and can also be pulled off without any other instruments. Right now, I'm thinking of Crazy Train, but I'm looking for something slightly harder. I can do stuff like sweep pick, tremelo pick, more advanced tapping, etc.

So...yeah. Anybody got a song.

I don't really know about Steve Vai. I mean, I'm not really on that level.

I guess that would be a good one if I could manage to make it a lot shorter. Thanks.

Any others?

the solo from Tornado of Souls by megadeth.

I was actually listening to the song when you said this. :O

It looks like I could maybe tackle that if I worked at it. Cool.

dont do one specific song, do a collection of riffs you know and that are hard for you to play but you can stull do them well.

Then do a solo or something, just show off you skills, to be honest doing a whole song wont you all your talents, it'll only show a small fraction of them.

Your high school has a rock band???

Or is it just a rock band in which the members go to your school?

if you were going to do a shred song I don't know if i'd choose buckethead. he's an amazing player and everything, but if you can play his stuff I'd go for a Vai or Satriani song.

Satch Boogie by Satriani.

In all honesty the solos are a lot of pentatonic stuff, some hammer-ons pull-offs, just a lot of boogie-rock playing. You just need to be able to hit a couple of pitch harmonics right right, do a fairly simple tapping section, and just get the groove down. You don't even need to play it exact, because it's not that sort of song, it's a boogie jam. But it's really fast paced and erergetic, so in about 2 weeks of focussed playing and you should play it. Plus, the main riff is fun as hell once you get it down. It's definitely a lot easier then Glasgow Kiss. But not as technically brilliant either, I guess.

And you can always use a backing track, right?

do what junior brown does and play a mix of a bunch of stuff of all styles into one song to show off your abilities more.

Tell their bassist and drummer to just get a good groove going and you'll jam with them. That's the best way to audition.
