I know this has probably been done many times before, but I need help. I've been looking everywhere for good scales on the internet, but all I get are ****ty ones that I can't do anything with. So, what are some good scales to use for technical/brutal death metal?

It'd be neat if they were tabbed out aswell. \m/

You may have to just come up with one to match the mood of your songs. I know Slayer has a sort of scale they often use. I prefer the Kumoi scale, but it may sound kind of exotic or Asian to some people.

It seems to me like harmonic minor scales would work, but that's just my opinion. You can google them and take a look.

Harmonic minor, diminshed.

That's the thing. Every site has a different scale. One site will have a totally different harmonic minor scale than the other. It brings me nowhere.

Maybe you should actually learn how scales and modes work. Then you wouldn't have to ask stupid questions.

I learned that when I was 13, but I didn't think I would need it. I started to get back into learning stuff like that a year ago.

A scale is a group of notes not just a shape on the fretboard. There are certain shapes that represent a scale and can be moved around, but that shape is only one of many ways to play a scale.

Anyway, the modes of Harmonic Minor would probably work well. Especially Phrygian Dominant. (Fifth mode of Harmonic Minor.) Or try Hungarian Minor perhaps.

First off, Slayer isnt Technical Death Metal. Not even close. Secondly, technical death metal songs (for the most part) just strive to be brutal, no other moods, so theres not TOO many scales to pick to make it sound really good.

No, its basically a dictionary for scales and chords, lulz.

Threadstarter, look into the Diminished and Harmonic Minor scales, as well as the Egyptian scale and the Gypsy scale later on.

That's impossible. A scale, for example, A harmonic minor, will have the same notes/intervals, always.

Especially for fans of Tool, APC, Avant-Garde, Ambient music, rock instrumentals, and fans of music in general. Will not disappoint.

If you don`t know how modes work, I would stick with harmonic minor just for the simple reason of not having the same notes as the relative major/minor of the scale. If the notes are the same, and you use them incorrectly, your stuff wont come out like you want.

Bascailly what i`m saying is, it`s harder to screw up when you use harmonic minor.

Sadly I had a guitarist try out the other day, and everything he was coming up with was painfully happy sounding. I showed him the harmonic minor scale (which he already knew) and showed him how to make dark, menacing sounding riffs, and he STILL made it sound like a day in the park I couldn't believe he could screw that up.

LOL, did he just completely skip the 3rd and 6th?
