So my friend and I want to repaint my starter guitar (its a Fender Starcaster made of agathis). We want to repaint it white, draw in characters from Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and give it to our old art teacher as a present.

Were willing to put 30 minutes of effort into it every morning for the whole school year and some weekends. Would that be enough time?

Neither of us have ever repainted a guitar before. Can someone give us a basic step by step guide of what we're suppose to do?

And also could someone give us a basic list of what we would need to do it with?

EDIT: I think the art teacher might definately have some idea of what to do, but I'm trying to plan one step ahead.

check out the sticky thread on refinishing. Also this website helped me out alot www.projectguitar.com

I was looking at the sticky, skimmed through five pages and gave up. I'll check out the link though, thanks!

So from this I gather the first step is sanding down everything: finish and paint?

Well, depends. Most have gotten away with just sanding down the clearcoat on the guitar and applying primer and such to that. You don't neccessarily have to reduce it to wood.

Which do you think would look nicer in the end? If they both look equally as nice, which is easiest for beginners?

Thank you, I hope its good enough to give to her though. If it looks like crap we'd come off cheesey. I talked to the teacher today and she said we could use her room after school. So we'd probally work for an hour a day.

The teacher said something about having to "bake" the paint onto the body. Anyone have any idea what she is talking about?
