go to wikipedia.

in non technical terms, tube powered just sounds overall way nicer

tubes tend to break up in a linear fashion. that means, if you gradually increase the input volume, it starts breaking up smoother. opposed to this, solid states break up immediately when it hits the clipping threshold. then, you won't be even able to use it cuz it breaks up so harsh.

also, tubes have a warm, smoother tone. more natural to your ears. (if you have normal ears.) Solid state distortion is also different. SS distortion tend to sound thin, like... your Marshall. they get very muddy in terms of tone when u turn it up. Tubes get warmer, punchier, fatter, sustainier when you turn it up. thats why many professional musicians use tube amplifiers. (excluding guy from tool... but whatever floats in his boat.)

so if you like solid state tone, just keep it. i'm not trying to convert you into tubes. but they're definitely better all around.

I'll do this as basic as possible:

Tubes are better for higher volumes & gigging (in general) because they sound their best at high volumes when the tubes are pushed, while solid state sounds worst as it nears it watt capacity.
Tube amp technology is older than solid state, but 99% of (experienced) players find it to be WAY superior as far as quality and tone goes.
If you just play for fun in your room, don't gig and don't play with a drummer, stick with solid state because you don't need tube, unless your a tone freak. Don't worry about tube amps until you start cranking your SS with other people and it sounds terrible.

no problem, but if you want a more in depth explanation, check out the stickied Tube Amp question thread in the forum Guitar Gear & Accesories. Also you should delete this thread before a mod sees it or it gets reported because you'll get warned.
