Well, seeing as the "Artist Gear Thread" is here, I thought I'd finally post my Artist- Pickup list I wrote awhile back and never got around to posting it anywhere other then Site Feedback.
If you mods think this should be added to the Artist Gear Thread and made into a giant sticky that works too.

DON'T EXPECT TO GET X'S EXACT TONE UNLESS YOU USE THE SAME TYPE OF GUITAR AND THE SAME AMP AND THE SAME EFFECTS!!!! CORRECT PICKUPS ARE ONLY A SMALL PART OF THEIR SOUND!
If you want to see anyone added to this list please PM and I will find out their pickups of choice and add them, or better yet you tell me their pickups and I’ll add them .

NOTE: Pretty much everyone pre-1970 used STOCK pickups, the replacment pickup industry didn't really start till the early seventies. Please, don't ask for Keith Richards or the Beatles, just look up what guitar they used and from what year and those are the pickups.

This just reminded me of how much I need new pickups. Pickups from '84 aren't too shabby, but I could do better. After I get my AC30 for Christmas, I'm spending on a slide from John and some new pickups.

EDIT: Actually, I do know that the Beatles used toaster top pups that came stock in Rickenbackers. That's about all I know .

Wow, well done!

FYI Eric Johnson uses his custom dimarzios in his humbucking guitars, he uses them to get a hollow bodyied style sound, could you please edit the list also Eric clapton uses/used vintage noisless pickups currently and fender lace sensors during the 80s.

congrats!

I might be being picky here but you have Zakk Wylde as EMG 81/80 and its 81/85. I think I saw a few like that....
#9
sweet!

nice selection of 80's guys there too.

george lynch used a duncan distortion in the 80's, didn't he? don't quote me on that, but he's only moved to the screamin' demon reasonably recently, i think.

and wargh! add reb beach, he uses an emg 89, i think? and emg single coils.

I saw in a couple of pictures that on Bucketheads Les Paul (only some pictures) that his neck pickup is painted in white. Can anyone explain to me why he would do this, and if there are any pros and cons.

The guy wears a KFC Bucket and a white mask during performances, and you're interested in the color of his pickup covers?

ah, not rob, reb!

you can't be an 80's guitarist with a normal name like rob...

also he used to play in winger. \m/

Seriously though, thanks. that disclaimer is probably a good idea too.

I spent awhile looking for his, because I know everyone wants his sound, and all he uses is vintage fenders with the orginal vintage pickups. I know Cord makes some pickups which are supposed to be just like the ones from the 50's and 60's, I havn't tried them out but theres lots of people here who have. I would say those might be your best bet. PM CorduroyEW or vist www.rockmonkeyguitars.com. Plus being a UG'er you get a 10% discount.

Yea, he does now. He wasn't back when I wrote this list though...

And I'll look into all of those pickups everyone, sorry I havn't been in here latly.

What pups would gibson put stock in there guitars around 1980? specifically Angus Young?

A pickup known as the "PAF Standard" or "orginal humbuckers" they then switched to the 490/498 in the 90's.
As for Angus Young, h now has his own signature pickup through Gibson.

jimmy page uses burstbucker now apparentyl

Most people are most likly trying to get his Zepplin sound from back then, not a new sound. I havn't tried the burstbuckers yet, are they just like the old Orginal PAFs?
If they are I'll add them.

Thanks everyone!

Haha, wow this is one epic Dave style post!

i'm not sure about the burstbuckers... there are several models. I'd have thought some of the models at least were more like a hot paf... but don't quote me, it's a while since I've tried them.

Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria plays the EMG 81/85 set and Billy Riker (not famous, but a great guitarist) from the band 3 plays Rockfield fatass.

also jimmy page used original 50s pickups in his telecasters
and hendrix just used stock strat pickups, youll find most people use stock pickups but just from older modles - apart from modern players who tend to go for custom pickups and so forth.
#26
you can add these:
mike amott (arch enemy) duncan jb & 59
jon donas (shadows fall) emg 81 85
matt bachand (shadows fall) emg 81 60
karl sanders (nile) duncan invader
mark morton (lamb of god) dual 59s
alexi laiho (CoB) duncan blackout

He has Gibson '57 classic in neck and '57 something in bridge. he has his own signature pickup though which is in his signature guitar so he might be using those in in his bridge but im sure about the neck
