Yeah.. I live in South Africa. So what, you may ask. So nobody's ever heard of RHCP, 30 secs to mars, Led Zeppelin, The Who etc.

This just totally pisses me off
Whenever i mention that my favourite band is RHCP, people usually turn their heads and try to cover their laughter. They've never heard of the band, but they laugh at the name. It just pisses me off that I have to go onto forums and international chatrooms to actually talk about the music I like and not some hip-hop sh1t.

Please give comment on my position and what the #!%$ you think I should do...
IF YOU DONT CHEW BIG RED THEN #$*@ YOU!!

Hey,

First of all 'LOL!!!!' maybe beucase the people in south africa dont play or like your type of music ?? i love RHCP aswell..
#3
people go through this every day. im not into the same stuff as my friends and theyre not into the same music as each other. doesnt mean that we get as pissed off about it as you do.
#4
I'm south african.... RHCP rule they damn legends... most ppl in south africa listen to bull**** africaans music that generally talks about the river flowing between table mountain or some crap vineyard..... or they listen 2 hip- hop trust me i feel your pain
#5
you're from SA?

lekka man, lekka.
Catch me,
heal me,
Lift me back up to the Sun
I choose to live

Try and fix it lol. The country that is- most of the country is isolated socially from the outside world, and is impoverished. Africans would stick to tribal tunes or rap or a hybrid of the two- just as white people tend to stick to rock. Show them the music, pull out the statistics and show them that they're lagging the rest of the world (well, if they listen to hip hop maybe not... but still)

BTW watch "Totsi", good south african film that came out recently.
Who reads sigs anyway
#8
bro, if you think talking to people about RHCP, the who and such is hard.... try someone like black flag :|

But dude, zeplins is a great place to go... lots of cool people with good music tastes.

Well I guess, I can still talk to them about some rock.. I mean one of my friends is crazy about Rammstein and Marilyn Manson. But still most people dont like rock..

I have tried to talk to them about RHCP, but yeah they dont buy it..

To be honest I really dont think its that bad, I live in Cape Town and all my friends listen to the same music as me (QOTSA; Mastodon; Rage against the Machine; Thrice etc.)
And I'v never met a person who hasn't heard of RCHP. It's just that the vast majority choose to listen to the trash that Mtv plays.

Apparently its not the same with you but where I live the scene is alive and well with awesome bands such as Hog's; half price; fokofpolisiekar and the Slash Dogs.
Plus the rest of the world is finally noticing us and we're finally gettin big bands coming over like metallica; mad caddies and NOFX!
Admittedly we are behind the rest of the world but what can you expect considering 14 years ago the world wouldn't touch us with a ten foot pole!

Some of the best shows I've been to were here in SA. I just really hate fokofpolisekar I find there stuff intensely irritating. The scene up north here is not too bad either....

I understand that there are way more rock supporters in, say, Cape Town (Cause of all the Afrikaners-yeah). Its quite a different story over here in PE though. There are still many people though..

I think sir, for one, that you are talking COMPLETE sh|t. And I would know this, considering I too, live in South Africa.
Look, it is obvious that if you talk to Afrikaaners or to coulereds/blacks etc (no racism intended, this is true), that they would never have heard of Red hot chili peppers. But honestly, even Jocks/Chavs have heard of RHCP.
So i for one, totally disagree with you sir, and I for one, have spoken to people where I live who HAVE heard of Necrophagist, Dimmu Borgir, and etc.
So please, stop feeling sorry for yourself, and if you really do not know any people who listen to your type of music, then maybe you are socialising with the wrong people.
/Thread.

Edit: there are some f()cking good clubs and bands from SA as well. Search on myspace for bands such as:
Erebus, Enmity, Is that blood?, Hell to pay, Fragmented Children, Warthane, Witchazel, and a load more.
for clubs: the doors, dragons lounge (extention of doors). london calling, Olive lounge, tempos, roxies, all of these are jhb metal/rock/punk clubs.
otherwise, there are a sh|t load of goth/metal clubs in Capetown, (try Gotham for f()ck sakes) and durban and even PE im sure, although never been there.
Pta has Zeplins and Dimension Door, which, I must say, kick some serious ass.

Otherwise dont generalize, I for one, know many fellow metal heads and rockers, and am friends with them. Not all south africans listen to sheisse music. although im russian, i dont count

I know a few people who listen to Necropagist.. One of my friends listens to Immortal, Slayer, Pantera etc. But i still struggle to find someone who is really into RHCP. I mean you stay in Joburg (Joburg is huge).

Most of my friends who actually listen to rock, listen to heavier stuff and aren't into The Who, Zep, Smasing Pumpkins. Either that or they're into Blink 182, Good Charlotte and Linkin Park..

Nonetheless its not too bad. joburg is huge yeah, but come on. I was in Sabie (some small ass town in Mpumalanga) for a class trip, for one week. and I found a rocker on the first day. lol. if you know where to look dude, go to bars late at night
otherwise check clubs and sh|t.. theres one rock/metal club in every city in sa (not town).

Otherwise, if you are really lonely, I suggest sir, that you move away from your computer, and go play outside in your favourite Metal shirt.
