Can the Soviet-Afghan war be considered a "disaster" in strict technical terms?

I got this history project where I have to select any disaster and cover it.

I want to know if the Soviet-Afghan war can be considered a disaster in strict technical terms. I need intellectual and serious advice here.

yeah...the soviets gained nothing, lost thousands of men and also after that the people in the soviet union (the patriotic idiots) stopped thinking that 'zomfg we kan pwn anyone'.

Kind of like US is right now...sort of...but it was bloodier then, cause soviets weren't people, and their supervisors didnt care if they sent 1000 of men to a certain death to save their own ass.

Jut watch 9th Company. It's a Russian made film about The Afgan War. Really good film. It's how the soldiers on a hill were forgotten in the war and left to die, only being rescued when under a massive attack and only a couple survive out of 39.

EDIT: Could someone tell me the estimation of how many Soviets died? And how long was the war? 7 years?

Imagine this
The US govrement fund a terrorist (and lets call him bin laden) working in sudan, then he takes all the money and make a plan to attack a building (lets call the world trade center), then the US troops attack some country in central asia that no one care about and they fail to find bin laden and then they attack another country that has nothing to do with this stuff
and thousands of the troops and dozens of thousands of civilians are killed.

whoa this wold make a great movie.

The Soviet-Afghan war was a disaster for the Soviet Union, yes. But you should ask your history tutor/teacher/lecturer/whatever to define "disaster", because it could be interpreted in so many ways.

Well, after the USSR pulled out the power and control of Afganistan was handed to warlords and civil war broke out in the early 1990's. After a short civil war the Taliban and their Extremists Islamic views were put in charge. This breeded terrorism and extremism

There was a civil war brewing on before the USSR invaded. In fact the USSR was originally sending troops in on request by the Afghan government to stop US-backed rebels from rising up against the largely communist regime in place.

The US basically put those extremists into power and screwed themselves in the ass.

My thoughts exactly. So 12 years later they invade again, fighting an enemy they put into power

Well you could argue that the Soviet/Afgan war and the U.S. support of the mujahadin created situation that the entire world is still dealing with today. The empowerment of muslim extremism. Ya sounds like a disaster to me.

I couldn't care less about the military bases around the world because none of them are being currently used to attack innocent civilians....

Plus, the weapons that the West supplied to the Afghans are still being used, and the support provided to certain of the warlords in the region could still be having an effect in the fighting going on there now. So the Soviet invasion has traceable consequences today, and into the forseeable future.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they're using a fair few soviet weapons aswell.
