Holy crap these last 3 months of pure holiday have gotten to me, i've forgotten all my maths, even simple stuff

IE:

5(2a - 4) - 2(4a + 7)

Now i can do the first blok, but what about the second? Do i multiply the second brackets with -2 or just do it with 2 and then take away the two sections?

5(2a - 4) - 2(4a + 7)

= (10a - 20) - (8a + 14)

= (10a - 8a) + (-20 - 14)

= 2a - 34

I think.

You multiply the second braket by -2

or you could switch the signs on the second bracket

5(2a - 4) + 2(-4a +- 7)

I'm very confused - i personally got 2a + 6 as the answer with it being:

(10a - 20) - (8a + 14) = 2a - 6 : although it could be 34

EDIT: With the last two posts it would seem it is 2a - 34

5(2a - 4) - 2(4a + 7) = 10a-20-8a-14 = 2a-34

thats it. all you have to remember is

+ x - = -
+ x + = +
- x - = +

then just multiply the numbers together with corredponding a's and ****

And also = x - 4(1-x) : i've not done this for ages and just banished all memmory of it so chee

I know it goes to= X - (4-4x)
Now i'd say that would go to 5X - 4 but yee

Yeah I know what you mean about the holiday killing our maths knowledge. I came back to do A level maths mechanics and I'm like "yes....Quadratics.....how do you do them again?"

^ Hahaa EXACTLY the same
I had my first maths lesson for A level today in college, and my heads actually close to falling off
