Eddie Van Halen?

He's a pretty good guitarist, but damn, I hate Van Halen!

John Frusciante (prepares for the flaming)

He's an awesome guitarist, but it seems like he doesn't really push himself with the Chilli Peppers, just kinda cruises along

His solo material is where his soul is at, check some of it out if you haven't already.

Although I love the Chili Peppers, they don't move themselves like they used to.

Is there any black people on UG?
I don't think a lot of black people play guitar anymore.

Yeah, thats what I mean, his own work feels a lot more alive and natural.....

Also the work he did with The Mars Volta (Omar taught him to play all the guitar on Amputechture to allow him to concenttrate on the production) shows off his technical chops

I don't really care if I get flamed, I love the entire Stadium Arcadium album. What I don't think people get about what john and the rhcp's put out is that its exactly what they want to put out, not what anyone else wants them to put out.

And yes, his solo work is fantastic.

But yeah, Ray Toro.

no matter what anyone says, the guy from MCR has quite a bit of talent. But the band still manages to suck, so thats another matter altogether...

I'm afraid that's not true.

Omar played all the leads on Amputechture. John only played the rhythm.

Yeah, this is true. I honestly think it was because the riffs are so bad that Omar wanted someone to blame them on. OK, maybe not, but the riffs on that album are horrible IMO.

I'll have to agree. I had to sit through about 5 tracks from The Black Parade, and I liked a few of the riffs, but the songs were just shit, IMO.

Matt Heafy and Corey Beaulieu (Trivium)

A bunch of nu metal guitarists, like Mick Thompson, Jim Root, We Borland, etc. Good riffage and skill, they just are/were in crap bands, as stated above.

Mark Morton and WIllie Adler (LoG). I like some LoG, but a lot of it just isn't for me. They're amazing, though.

Synyster Gates is also a good guitarist, but happens to be in A7X.

I love Nightwish, but I think Emppu should be given more creative control to write his riffs.

Damn, people already mentioned Wes Borland. Other than him, I'd have to vote for Mike Mushok from Staind (they had some heavy-ass riffs on Dysfunction), or Stephen Carpenter from the Deftones...not to say that the Deftones are a crappy band, but if that dude were let loose in a metal band, I have a feeling it would sound really good.
