Bariton sax is actually the coolest sounding of the saxophones. If you put enough into it it starts to sound like a fuzz bass. And bari-sax solos are about the most awesome sounding things in jazz.
But, of the two listed, alto, because it usually leads the band after the first trumpet and the tenor just seems a bit boring.

to the guy at the top, it's spelt Trombone.
I almost tried to choke him through the computer for that.
(I play trombone)

but to really scream, you wanna play alto. :]
They get all the cool parts. they usually play with trumpet 1 or the horns.
or....

play flute.

if you wanna solo, alto is the way to go. Tenor/bari's don't really solo, they usually play along with low brass.
#23
my teacher can like shred on his tenor. alto sounds cool, but id go with tenor
#24
Alto for solo's.

Though last year we had a tenor who got like 80% of the solos. He was an awesome alto (played Cowboy Bebop theme sophomore year) but decided he wanted to step back a little. Instead the band teacher just bought new music with tenor leads.

Personally, I greatly prefer the tenor sound. However, altos are probably the more likely of the two to have solos, whereas tenors probably play roughly the same parts as the low brass instruments.

I say tenor. I play it, and we actually get a lot more lead work than you would expect. We're pretty good, so she's re-written some stuff so that we can play it too. 'Cause we dom'.

Bari's are awesome...I'm too short to use one though.

I played tenor in my 8th grade year.
I liked it, but I remember regretting that I didn't pick flute.
lol. >.<
And my main instrument was Trombone, (I had two band classes...) so I played pretty much with the trombones/baritones in the songs we did.

....

Play alto.

Tenor plays some pretty damn awesome solos. Alto in general plays the high pitched ones, while Tenor will play the ones with the technique known as "growling" in Saxophone "theory". Really good Tenor solos are the ones in Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run, and Jungleland.

I play tenor and have some really kickass solos in our show this year. It all depends on which sound you favor over the other; if you like high pitched, crazy, out of control screaming solos, I'd say go with alto. For a more growling, really grinding but IMO more awesome sound, go for tenor. (Trust me, those things can produce some hellish noises ) I've always preferred the deeper voice myself, but it's up to you. If you let someone else choose for you, you won't be satisfied.

Ex-alto player, right here.

That's what you need to go with. Tenor is pretty good too though.. I enjoyed playing my alto on street corners though. That's how i made some extra cash as a 9 year old.
