I want to know if I have to have a head to be able to plug my guitar into an amp cabinet?

Yes because there would be nothing powering the cabinet. The cabinet is just a box with a speaker wired into it.

Hey you don't need a guitar to play guitar. Check out the "Air Guitar Championships." Bad joke. Yeah you gotta have a head.

Yeah, and the head has to match the ohms of your cab

What does that mean?

What does that mean?

Say if your cab says 8 ohms on the back where you'd plug the cable in, make sure your amp head is compatable with it. It's comparable to trying to jam AA batteries into a remote that takes AAA. It just doesn't work.

Well, it'll work, just not to it's potential. And I don't think it's good for the cab or head at all.

But yes, you need a head to power it.

For the purposes of his understanding, it's much easier to just say it doesn't work and get him to match the ohms.

My tips on playing air guitar:
1. Large amounts of an intoxicating substance.
2. Music turned to ear-bleeding volume.
3. Inability to play any musical instrument.
4. Lack of any other way to gain attention.

I checked my book to add onto your first point. There's a chapter on 'talent juice' that tells you that the more alcohol you have, the better your air guitar playing is, but if you cross that fine line, your playing becomes sloppy, your words start to slur, and you yak your brains out.

Not so quick there, speedy gonzales! You are right about matching the ohms IF you have a tube head. If the old bean has SS head, then it's different! Aha!

^It should match whether or not it's tube or SS. Matching loads gives you full transfer of power between the head and cab. It might not have that big of an effect on SS amps, but it's best to match them anyway.
