Hey im thinking about takeing my old (cheap) crate guitar, and cutting off ALOT of it... to fit it in school lockers and play dureing lunch and before school hours..Anyone know if this is a HORRIBLEY bad idea..I dont have much experence in modding guitars, but i think i could cut off the points and everything i have some pictures to show a basic idea...of corse it will look better, but still wont look cool at all haha!

This is what im thinking it will look like(something like this anyways)...cant get it without the cutting cuz the files too large!

O.o might effect the tone... but you won't be on an amp anyways. Kinda risky but that seems to be what this forums all about lol.

idk... itd prlly really change up the tone though because youd have to cut alot of it off but if its just for like before school n whatnot sure..

I can't imagine anything worse than shagging to Mark Knopfler.

Maybe shagging Mark Knopfler, but that's about it.

Well if your going to do all that, You should strip out the electronics out of it, and make it into some really cool shape. I only say this because after you cut it to fit like that... pluging it into an amp is going to make children cry, and the dead cover their ears.

Jesus christ...I worry about peoples spelling skills these days...

anyway...The lockers in my old 2nd level school were pretty small, you couldnt even put a guitar neck in them on its own, yet alome a cut up guitar.

Did you take measurements of the locker to see will it fit?

And who cares about the tone if its a cheap piece of **** that he wants to cut up anyway? I dont think tone is a major factor in this project, so im not sure why people are so worried about it (sometimes i wonder if people are trying to build on the idea the poster above them had....lol)

Woot, I was the first poster on the tone issue, but the thing is. If he does it don't expect to play though an amp on it. Would sound even worse then it does now. So why not rip out the eletronics so he doesn't have to cut around them. So it doesn't look like a "Wangcaster" lol. Might save some emberasment <-- trying to butcher english> yes he should take measurements! lol.

some turn out good. like these that started as strats:

My newest installment.

Well actually I di this a while agao but meh...

Ok I started off with a regular squier strat. It was my first guitar as I'm sure it was for amny of you.

One day I decided I wanted it to look a little better. Recently I had seen Noodles' duck tape Ibanez. So I wanted to do that. I took the whole guitar apart, sanded it down, then covered it in black ducktape. I started clearcoating but because the ducktape was folded and wrinkled it could be compressed. When I put any presure on it, the ductape gave way the the clear coat cracked.

So I scrapped this idea. I ripped all of the tape off and tried to think of something else to do. IO wa spretty much out of ideas so I just started hacking away at it with a saw. I then sanded it smoot and painted it white. I reshaped the pickguard to match as well.

Next I decided I wanted and angled humbucker. Actually I didn't decide I wanted it angle. It just happens that a strats bridge single coild is angled so the hole for the crews were at an angle. I had an old Ibanez bridge pickup sitting around so I cut the pickguard to fit it. It really doesn't sound any better. It just sounds bigger.

My next project was to put some red LEDs in it. I wired all of the pickups to one tone pot, then put an on/off/on switch in the second tones pot's place. This controls the chain of LEDs that are under the pickguard. When on you can see a red light around each pickup.

Hmmm, I know even a guitar that size wouldn't fit in the lockers we have at my school.. Well I guess it'll be fine, if it's just an old piece of junk. If you aren't interested in playing it through an amplifier it may be just a worthwhile an investment to purchase one of these. www.shredneck.com.. Basically its just the neck of a guitar up to about the 8th fret. I think that would be just as wise. Plus you could probably sneak it into classes without teachers noticing

Because school is where you spend time hanging out with other kids who play guitar, and then you can sit around in the playground and jam. I used to take my accoustic some days, but I often didn't bother putting it anywhere, I 'd just slide it under my chair in class. I remember playing in class a couple of times when the teacher didn't show up too.

Rip the electronics out if you do. It will sound like **** through an amp anyway, and you'll have less restriction of the shape.

I did that - truss rod is now floating in the sea ( we smashed the remainder up down the beach ). It was taking shape until I pissed about with the electronics. It was very light and still played well enough.

Holy **** just carry it around or leave it in a teachers office, thats what I do.

Some people don't feel like doing that. I know I don't feel like bothering teachers with my guitar, but I don't bring my guitar to school >: ) also i'm in collage it can stay in my truck untill needed.

what about cutting the bottom off like from below the bridge. like from side to side not from neck to strap pin.

Or build a plank...

This is not a well thought out response.

The tone through an amp won't be affected all that much. This is a solid body. All the interaction between the strings, bridge and body/neck will be very similar to what they were before. The STRING movements will be very close to what they were before. That's what the pickups sense. Not the sound you hear through the air. The sound without an amp will change more, because of the missing body area. It will probably be a bit quieter, but you never know for certain when doing these sorts of things.

There are two things you will want to consider:

1 - The balance will change. Your guitar will now be head-heavy. If you plan to strap up with this, don't make it worse by shortening the tail. Leave the length where the strap pin is, right now.

2 - If you plan to sit while playing, give a bit of thought to the shape of the body where it will rest on your leg.
