I'm about to tackle the song. Any tips, advice, etc?

Ah, this song is a constant work in progress for me...although I've never gone much beyond the main riff. Just work on the picking for the main riff, it can be quite a headache at first. Try learning the main riff for Scarified too to help you with the alternate picked runs.

I know the beginning to scarified (not perfectly...I'm still trying to get it down), but yeah, PG really works those alternative picking.

Yeah, it's really helped me too. I'm quite good at the ole alternate picking runs now thanks to PG, so just stick with them. You're probably a better guitarist than me though so you'll pick it up in no time.

As for the solo's....erm....good luck? haha

oh man i love technical difficulties solo! a shred comforably numb solo is a dream come true!
#7
Aha, I don't know about better.

Actually, I found the solo to be...well, quite interesting! I actually got that intro-legato lick sort of down...which surprised me.

The thing that makes me sad is that I need tons-o-delay to have a similar sound of PG's lead tone. I can get a pretty good one with this solid-state amp at jazz band.

Haha yeah, I'd feel bad about putting more than a slapback level of delay through my setup though, kinda hides things a little bit tonewise >.<

I love my PGM, but man does it damage easily. It's got chips and such and I've never dropped it or anything. So frustrating that my most expensive guitar and most well cared is the most damaged. Ah well, I never intend on selling it though, seeing as it was half my money and half my folks for my 18th. Too much attachment.

I've seen the video of your tone example, you seem to have a more developed "touch" than me. I've no qualms admitting that, you've played longer than me so it's only natural

Yeah, you know, sort of tonality from the fingers. It's hard to explain.

buy yourself some steroids for your hands, it's the only way

learning some Gilbert is tiring, practice your picking, make sure your as clean as possible, take things slow etc. etc. also take it one part at a time, when i learn Gilbert songs i find that all those notes confuse me when i try to do it all at once.

Gotcha.

Are there any good alternative picking excercies? Like, specifically for Paul Gilbert? Because I know he uses a different technique.

I find it really helpful if I just dead the strings with my fretting hand and do the picking without any of the fretting. Lets me work my right hand, then I add the left hand.

Do you have the Guitar Techniques with "Technical Difficulties"? It has the FULL tab and a video of Paul playing it and another of him explaining the last run in the song. It's great.
#19
i might be doing the wrong way but i does legato on them on every possible note. i am nvr a speed picker or sweeper. it does sound alittle diffferent hmm
#20
^Ahh, yeah...

I try to legato as much as possible just to get the feel for what's going on, but having to put alternative picking into that is pretty hard. =/.

I guess either way works, but I think I'll chose to go alternative-picking on this one just to build my technique.

Thanks for the help everyone!

make sure that when you get to the

-------17 p 15------------------------
-----------------16---------------------
--------------------17---14------------
------------------------------17--------
-----------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------

descending lick, ECONOMY PICK!! it took me a month to decide no matter how hard i tried, it just WOULDNT be alternate picked at full speed.

also, id say have a go at zakk wylde's miracle man solo as a good picking warm-up just to get you going
#23
Attempting to play any PG stuff will make you say "Damn I need to work on my right hand more"

He's an alternate picking nazi
