At the moment, im 14, but when im old enough i have wanted to for a while now, and still do, want to join the police. My uncle has been in the police for about 20 years now and says 'Oh,youd better watch out, the police is not what it used to be!' and that just triggered my parents off saying.'The pay is crap' and 'Trust your uncle,he knows what he's talking about!' but honestly, i didnt really give a crap, but just recently, its started to play on me, but it hasnt put me off (yet).I dont know what to do, i want to work as something that i will enjoy with decent pay, and i think the police fits both of them...Its just like they think that if i join the police, i will phail at life, but i dont think i will.

Has anybody else here had problems like this with parents?

Yes. My parents want me to be like doctor's or something but I want to be a train operator. Great pay, and you see everything.

I have the exact problem. My auntie and uncle are really posh and they want me to be an accountant, and my parents are like "listen to them, you want a nice life don't you?". I want to yeh, but I want to be happy as well, and accountancy is really boring.
#4
jeez....dont really know what to say, but your 14 man, those kinda things shouldent bother you right nnow, you have all the time in the world to think about it.if by the time your 18 you still wanna do it, your parents cant do sht.its your call when the time comes.

Isn't getting into the Met. police really hard for young, white, straight men at the moment?
I believe they are using positive discrimination to make it easier for women, people from ethnic minorities and homosexuals to get a job in the police force than the typical white man. Positive discrimination FTL

Trust me, when you're a bit older you could want something else. I know since the day I started Secondary school, I wanted to be an architect. I geared everything towards it, I've gotten to my last year and realised I don't really enjoy that much and it involves maths, which i'm really not good at.

But your parents can't force you into a career when you move out. Do want you think is best for you.
#8
Ignore them, they'll come round to realising it's what you want eventually.

lol my parents dont want me to go to music college, they are doing everything to keep me away from it, but im 18, they cant hold me forever =)

i think you should do what you want, if you want to be a cop, then be one, look up and see how it pays, maybe if you build yourself a nice career it will pay well and all

I say go for it, it seems to be a fuffilling job if your willing to put up with the danger.

Why do you want to become a cop? So you can pester skateboarders for not wearing a helmet? Go fight real crime if you're going to become a cop. Don't waste your time around skateparks, lurking like a loser, waiting for people to not wear their helmets to give them tickets.

Same here.I thought about being a dentist, but ive gone off it. Its soooo annoying aint it? I hate it.My nan and grandad have even got my work experience sorted with a guy ive met twice on the other side of the city in the dental hospital I feel kinda bad though...i moved school to do a different kind of science (which they didnt do at my old school) and if i join the police,i wont really need it as much...or will i? i suppose i could join the fastrack program to get bumped up the ranks quicker...

^You are in the same boat as me lol, youre parents think that if you dont be an accountant, you wont get rich like we all want to...prove them wrong :P

I want to be a marksman in the police I love guns, and im a good shot lol (not bragging) You have 2 years probation then you get to choose which path you take; Firearms officers,Dogs etc.

that's happening in a lot of job fields (and colleges for that matter)

You're right. Although that's not even positive discrimination. It's just outright discrimination, which is apparently ok because it's discrimination against though who usually get it good. It's stupid and it's going completely against the equal ****ing rights that it stands for.

My parents don't really care I guess. I mean I'm sure they do, but they never mention it. I guess I'll see if the guitar thing works out, if not I might go into some computer fields, like network architecture or something. I've always thought of building guitars and selling them, that would be pretty cool to do as a second job in my spare time.

I'm not really worried about my future that much. I'll do something. I don't really want to be rich, gettin' by will do the trick for me.

I was 14 and decided I want to be a musician , im now 17 and im following through with it. If you feel it in your heart go for it , don't let anyone stop you because at the end of the day its YOUR life.

Being a firearms officer doesn't always mean being a good shot and liking guns...its more about problem solving and being able to make the right decisions consistently under pressure... they'll teach you how to use the equipment.

You also have to pass an extra fitness test in all the gear.

Here in my little quaint town, we have what we call 'Greeneville's Finest' which are actually just a bunch of fat lazy slobs who are crooked and don't do for the community. One of my aunts died because they didn't arrest a drunk driver. They pulled him over and everything, but once they saw who his dad was, they let him go. He hit my aunt head-on just a couple of miles down the road

Whats wrong with wanting to be a rockstar? If no one ever took chances we wouldn't have anyone famous.

EDIT: It just kinda of pisses me off when people have preconceived notions about people who want to be a famous musician. I have a plan just as anyone else , I have aspirations and I know what I need to do. College is not my thing , nothing is my thing except playing the guitar. If everyone had the attitude " i can't be a musician , its too risky , screw it " we'd never have seen some of this world's best bands.

Because the idea of wanting to be a rock star, as opposed to just a musician is ridiculous. Whenever anyone says they want to be a rock star, I always think negatively about it, however when they want to be musicians, which could include session guitar players, it's different.
