When I pick fast, my elbow starts to hurt, especially if i do it for an extended period of time. I've been told that im using my elbow to pick and i know thats not good. So im trying to work on using my wrist, but when i do it still hurts my elbow. How do I know if im picking correctly with my wrist?

Look up videos of guitarists playing on YouTube. Watch their wrists closely. Unless it's Jeff Hanneman.

EDIT: This is a good video, especially at the beginning: http://youtube.com/watch?v=eZspGWM-aWs

try adjusting your strap

Yeah, try that, too. Put it up as high as necessary, don't worry about how you look. Tom Morello wears his insanely high, but he's awesome, so it doesn't matter. Try it as high as it will go, and if that doesn't work, lower it a couple of inches, and do that until it's comfortable, and doesn't cause your arm any pain.
