I disagree with The Smiths (album) They have much better stuff. The first album is kinda raw IMO

Love the list. It's introduced me to some new bands/ artists, including Nick Drake, who is amazing.

+1

The Rec. lists on UG always help me out intensely.

"Catholic Education" is one of the catchiest semi-instrumental jamz ever written.

Y'know, a while back I was going through my dad's old CD's and I found Bandwagonesque. I was all, "No way, Dad, you like Teenage Fanclub?" And he told me he never listened to it, that he must have gotten it free when he worked as a disc jockey.

Needless to say, I swiped it.

the moon and antarctica is already on the list. as much as i would agree that LCW is better, TMA is easier for someone to get into.

I say this list needs:

Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone by The Unicorns
Automatic for the People by R.E.M.
( ) by Sigur Ros

Other than that I think the list is pretty gosh darn good.

I'd say "In Utero" is MUCH more "indie" than Nevermind...Nevermind was sooooooo commericial!

But it's still Alternative, and it is the Alternative & Indie forum.

Along with my previous suggestion, I think the following should be added:

Sugar - Copper Blue (1992)
American Music Club - Everclear (1991)

and maybe something by Daniel Johnston? I know he didn't have any 'classic' indie albums but maybe "Songs of Pain" or "Hi, How Are You?" should be added as a starting point to any new-comers looking to dive into his discography.

EDIT: about Richard Hell... I know he's great and all but I'm not sure he should be on a list of essential ''indie' albums. Punk? definitely. If you are going to add one it should be Blank Generation though

^I hear what you're saying but you could tell he had some effect on the garage rock indie bands, if you catch my drift.

Also Sugar should be added to the list, not many people listen to them!

#80
Ack, I almost forgot about Sugar! That Bob Mould has so many strokes of brilliance going on, it's hard to keep up.
