Okay, I can read music and tell you what the notes are, and I know the alphabetical setup of my guitar, but with guitar music one note symbol for say a D note, can be played a few different ways on my guitar, but still look exactly the same on paper. how can I tell which way to play it on my guitar?

well, obviously notation dictates which octave you should play the note in, then you choose the position which is most appropriate to the rest of the piece. just common sense really.

this is the wrong forum btw. belongs in musician talk.
my name is matt. you can call me that if you like.
