is there someone who does legato all the way, even simple playing? totally ignoring everything, keeping picking to a real min?

hm... you mean, even for stuff like rhythm? or just for leads?

I personally try to balance between picking and legato.

I tend to find myself doin' more legato, so my style is about 80% legato, 20% alt picking..

I find that the alt picking stands out more this way, whereas it becomes mind-numbing with dudes like Zakk Wylde, Al DiMeola, and to an extent John Petrucci...

i like legato, but if you use it too much it loses its greatness, just like picking at a thousand mile per hour gets old after a while. you gotta learn to balance. i see where you coming from though

Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
John Petrucci

satriani uses primarily legato for improv, however he does venture into a lot of other things

I love to just mute with my palm on the big strings and do legato all over the place sometimes. Its pretty fun and you can pull out some ridiculous licks sometimes.

I think the key point is variety, legato sounds better when you have some picked lines to contrast it with, and vice versa. It is ideal to be able to do both.

Randy Rhoads used legato for all the fast parts in his solos, keeping his picking to a minimum.

No, because that'd be boring. Over-use of any technique leads to boring playing, good players vary their phrasing to keep things interesting.
