I've had an Epiphone Les Paul for a few years now, and just started playing it again.

The pickups don't sound too hot imo, especially the one in the bridge.

My wah also comes through a bit weak, not sure if it's to do with the Pickups although my Strat has no problems with Wah.

Any good ones people can recommend for tones like Slash/Hammett/Coheed+Cambria?

I play through a DSL 401.

Cheers for any advice.

what kind is it?

I always find a reliable combo in a les paul is a Seymour Duncan SH-4 (JB) and SH2n(Jazz),

PAF's maybe???

Slash uses low output PAF style humbuckers with Alnico 2 Magnets made by Seymour Duncan. I think Hammet uses EMG's doesn't he? The 2 tones are polar opposites. You are more likely to get Hammet tone with a slash style rig than the other way around.
Not taking any online orders.

I play through a bridge position semour duncan invader and a neck position invader zebra and it sounds just like hammet. They're passive pickups, but they're the highest output passives you can get. Give 'em a shot.

So getting Slash style Pickups and keeping my DSL is best if I want both tones?

I'll look into the pickups, cheers.

EMG. I know people are gonna say they're overrated, but Claudio from Coheed uses EMG 85 and 81.

Yould also go compromise and get a nice, sweet sounding neck pickup for those tones and a beefier, more versatile bridge pickup that'll cover a number of tones provided you know how to use your guitar's controls.

I reckon a swineshead warthog in the bridge and a condor in the neck would do pretty much everything you want.

^is the DC resistance directly the output of the Pickups?

i thought it was the inductance that determines the output...

I've been listening to samples on Seymour's website, but every pickup sounds more or less the same.

It's proving difficult to single one or two out.

Yeah I checked them out.

It's hard to imagine what It'd sound like in my Epi Les Paul though.

They do sound awesome, but would they cut Metal through my DSL 401?

I'm thinking of getting a Tubescreamer too, a TS9.

Send the guys at Swineshead an email about what you want and what you've got, and you'll find they're probably quite helpful, and might be able to recommend what combo of pickups you should get.

Ok I did it, and this is the reply I got.

Dear Sir,

I've been recommended your pickups via a forum.

I've listened to numerous pickups but just cant decide.

I'm after a hard rock/metal tone. Metallica, Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, Guns n Roses.

I use a Epiphone Les Paul throught a DSL 401.

The pickups in my Epi are a bit rubbish at the moment, the bridge pickup is too muddy, not crisp enough.

I was wondering if you could recommend any pickups in particular? The guy on the forum recommended Warthog for the bridge and Condor for the neck, but I'm not so sure, as I don't even know what is used in the sound clips you provide. (Guitar and amp wise)

Many thanks for your help,

----------------------------------------------------------

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for the email. I think the Warthog bridge / Condor neck would be a great choice for the music that you play. It's great to hear you liked the sound clips! They were recorded using a Epi Les Paul and a Marshall AVT amp.

If you have any other questions please let me know.

Thanks,

Jon Bell

Erm, all he's done is say yeh they're good. He's also said they were used in an Epi LP and a AVT Marshall, yeh right! Now I don't know whether to trust this, and it's a coincidence, or take it as complete bs.

Thoughts?

I'd heard that the Swineshead clips were recorded on an AVT quite some time ago, let's fae it...it's not the kind of thing you'd make up is it? As far as what he's said goes, he's just confirmed that the Warthog/Condor set is probably the best bet for you, if he though different he'd have recommended something else.

Exactly. Of course, he's going to recommend his own pickups, but there's not a lot in it for him if he gives you a load of nonsense you don't wanna hear. Plus he did say if you had any more questions to let him know. You could easily ask him what kind of variations of tone you can expect from that pickup combination, etc. Just probe him some more and see what he says.

Seriously, I don't think there's much difference between the pickup makers per se, but considering Swineshead prices, they seem to be much better value for money than the American companies.
