so i can palm mute all 6 strings, that's not the problem. the problem palm muting the E and A strings from vibrating through palm muting while still playing the higher strings with my hand at the same level it would be if i were playing lower strings.

if you don't know what i'm talking about, i just don't want my hand to be angled when i play the higher strings.

so how do you go about this?

Thanks.

actually, i'm fine with angling my hand, if it doesn't effect my skill or potential...i see paul gilbert doing it, so it has to be ok, right?

Well here is how I do it depending on the song.

I either lift my hand palm completely off all the strings real quick to play the unmuted notes.

Or I angle/shift my hand slightly so my hand is only resting on the E and A.

+1

also, if your going for the higher strings another technique might be to mute with your fingers rather than palm, ie rest the edge of your pinky or ring finger on the higher strings.

I can't imagine anything worse than shagging to Mark Knopfler.

Maybe shagging Mark Knopfler, but that's about it.
