I need to get this horrible acrylic paint off my tele so i can get my tone back to normal. how should i go about it? what finish is used on these (98 american tele) thanks

You have a bit of a chemistry problem. Any thing you get to take off the acrylic may eat up the finish underneath. It may be best to strip it down to bare wood. A chemical peel that won't hurt the wood underneath. Guitar wood is different from furniture wood because you don't want something that could soak into it and ruin the sound. I would advise getting in touch with a luthier. They can tell you what's safe to use. Otherwise its sandpaper time.
