looking for a high gain combo for around £600 to £700 , which is the best

ENGL Screamer might be worth a look. If you could look into a head and a 2x12" cab you'd have a lot more options such as Laney GH50L, ENGL Fireball etc.

I'm just about to order a ENGL Screamer :P

Just adding whatever assorted bits and pieces I might need from Thomann to my basket and away I go!

^ Nice, they're great amps.

engl screamer, laney tt, peavey xxx/5150/6505, marshall jvm. possibly some more i haven't thought of. you just really need to try them to see which you prefer...

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

^ There are better options than Mesa for the price here in the UK. That said, if you can find a used F30 or F50 at a decent price it may be worth a look.

Look into all the ENGLs, Laneys and Peaveys mentioned though.

i agree. i tried a mesa f50 recently, was far from impressed. if you ask me, £1200 should mean my tongue is on the floor.

obviously personal preference and all that, but i've tried amps at half the price which sounded better, IMO.

obviously this doesn't apply if you're in the USA.

The three amps mentioned are excellent amps, it is a matter of personal preference basically, there is no real "best one" IMO. Mesa Mark IV would be the one with distortion and cleans, but that costs more. I had about the same budget as you, you can see which one I went with in sig.

You still didn't really answer my question anyway: What sort of metal? As in what bands are you trying to replicate tonally?

aye that sounds not too bad. i mean new a dsl100 is what, about £600? that bottom of the line cab couldn't be much more than £200... while how much was a nomad new?

check the second hand prices on the nomad, though... no point in getting a smokin' deal if you can't shift it on...
