Carvin. Its going to blow those two out of the water, due in part to the fact its USA amde.

I personally recommend the Ibanez RG1570. The trem is the best one I've ever used (better than a floyd in my opinion) and it's a very versatile guitar. Most people think that all it can play is metal because that's what Ibanez markets it as. All in all though, it's my favorite guitar. Very good bluesy tones with the neck pup, all metal in the bridge, and classic rock and twangier sounds in the middle.

Carvin or the 6-tring S with a JB/Jazz or some other pickup change would work.

i would only be able to get it completely stock, and i wouldnt want to get my first custom guitar with nothing on it

get a gretsch.
If those are the guitars he's been looking at, why on earth would he want a Gretsch?

Get an RG2888. It's got all the strings you'll ever need, and it's hardtail.

hey, i'm just throwing the idea out there. he wants to play classic rock, and in my opinion, gretsch fits most of his criteria.

I'd vote for either carvin or the 6-string S.

Carvin are not handmade. The reason (in part) that they are so inexpensive is that they are machine-built. Yes, they are built-to-order, but that doesn't change the fact that most of the parts of fabricated by machine.
