How do you make the spring reach the claw? I don't want to unscrew the claws too far back because I don't want it to pop out.

It wont pop out, the screws are very long. The other way is to place them in the trem and use a thin metal object like pliers through the ring to pull the spring to the claw. I recommend you unscrew the claw at least an inch.

detune a little first,

put the upsidedown guitar on ur lap, and pull the trem towards the floor, and the springs will compress.

then use the pliers like said^

if you Have to, then loosen the trem screws a bit. but you should be able to add a spring without changing ur screws too much.
