2 channels so yoiu can switch from one to the other (clean to heavy, or vise versa) without messing with all the controls. It's for easy switching.

is it a distortion pedal because distortion pedal plus distorted amp....IMO sounds bad

use your dist pedal on the clean channel.

Or don't use it at all...

Tweak channel 2 until you find a tone you like. If that fails then go back to the distortion stompbox, unless of course you find that your distortion stompbox has "your tone".
