I'm thinking about getting one, but I know next to nothing about them, other than that they sound cool.
What's the price range going to be for a decent instrument? What kind of tuning is it in?
Just talk sitar to me, baby.

if you play guitar, you can just use a sitar simulator pedal, i think they're pretty cheap.

Meh...That's cheating. I'd rather have a real one.

ok so what i have established is it had 20 or so strings
7ish are playable
some are just there
some are under the frets
the frets are raised and movable
3 of the 7 strings are for the drone sound
the others are for the melody (mostly on the first string)
2 bridges
one for the 7 "drone strings"
the other for the strings that run under the frets
its usually tuned to C# or D

and its supposedly really hard to play
but just check wiki about it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitar#Sitar_mechanics
i dont think it looks or sounds that hard?
i think i want one now!

EDIT:

Price is anywhere from $300 on ebay to like THOUSANDS (just like guitars)
typical price seems to be $800 to $900 ish

Yeah, I just read the wiki myself. I think I could probably pull it off without too much trouble.

Lol a friend of mine has a sitar... he actually has two, one is a shiesty one he made out of a gorde. all he does to play it is he just improvs a melody on the first string and the other stings( ones under the frets) resonate to give it that crazy tone. as for tuning i have no idea. i would guess its based on eastern music theory rather than western so thatll cause some problems

The drone strings are tuned to the raga which is essentially the Indian scale. I can't remember what the actual strings are tuned to, i'm sure you can find the Western equivelent (sp?) online, i've seen it before.

You use a special pick to play it called a mizrab, it's what is generally taught.

Indian music is a lot more intricate and involved then Western music. Before you go ahead and buy a sitar start listening to real classical Indian music and start looking into the theories behind the music. It's very difficult.

I saw an Arabian tramp busking with one in Manchester, he was pretty much shredding the Sitar...

Grab yourself a tambourine as well, and maybe some round, yellow lense sunglasses, and you'd be straight up hippy.
