When I was first getting into home recording someone reccommended a PC programme called Leaf Drums (a fully working trail, that never ran out). Quite a versatile little thing which came in handy for basic drum loops (I only ever used it as a metronome), but if you learned to use it properly, some complex things could be achieved too. Sounded ok, not like a live kit or anything, but it was enough to lay some tastly licks over. You could also mixdown the loops, or entire drum tracks if you wanted as wav files to use in your production package.
Take a peek, It might be close to what your looking for.
