ok so i have an Ampeg 8x10 and it's not the easyest to haul around. (duh!) well at rehersalls i dont need a cab that bg but at shows it is necissarry. so i was looking for a smaller bass cab that would sound okay. it doesent have to sound pro or anything just bareable for rehersals. (defenently not a behringer, a hartke maybe)
i want either a 2x10 or a 1x15(with hoirn) a 4x10 is probably out of the budget but that would be okay too

my budget is around $200-$300 i was looking more into the used section. It has to handle either 300W8ohm or 450W4ohm

heres stuff i was looking at so maybe you can tell me what thought about theese.

-ampeg2x10(that would be ideal but probably could not aford or find one)
-SWR workingman 2x10 (looks doable)
-Trace Elliot - 1048 hp 4X10
-hartke cab
-CArvin cabs
-Trace Elliot 2103H 2x10 Bass Cab
-SWR 4x8 (donno if i'll like this but maybe yo can tell me you experiences)
-found a BASSON cab for $350 i want really bad hope i can get the cash before it's sold
-also found a mesa boogie 2x10 for $250 it says mesa boogie on the cab wich means it is older.

yeah bassicly if any of you can give me youre experence with any of those, thoughts on any of those, can tell me wich one is better out of those or can recommend me something i have not found yet. main proprity is sound it doesent have to sound PRO because it is not for recording or live, its just for rehersals. just nice sound that is bearable. but some of theese cabs i found look like they might actually sound ace.

thanks

Man last time I was at a music shop I was playing out of a little hartke 2x10 combo and I don't think it sounded that bad. I mean, especially for a practice amp I dug it. I say if you can find one of those with a decent price tag on it I would snag it up.

^ hehe thanks would have to be a REALLy good deal because im finding some better ones for around the same price on used.guitarcenter.com

i think hartke will be a problem because there wattage on their cabinets is pretty low (im talking 300-400 at 4ohms) I would definatley look for mark bass, so light and the sound they create is fantastic

Have you ever thought about avatar amps? They're supposed to be pretty high quality and affordable. I've never tried one, but I'd like to very soon.

Specialists in crazy-expensive neo cabs.

Fixed.

Check out Avatar, I've been drooling over their 2x12 for months now. It handles around 500 watts, costs $300 + $42 shipping and you can order them in 4 ohm or 8 ohm.

lol... there are much more expensive boutique amp makers that make neo cabs. Epifani are mid ranged in the neo cab industry.

True, but the Avatar 2x12 is a "neo cab."

I scowered Harmony Central for hours reading about that cabinet and found nothing but positive reviews raving about how amazing that cabinet was.

im not really worried about them haveing neodynium magnets or whatever it can be heavy, just need them small(er) volume-wise. thats why i was thinking 2x10. mesa's 1x15 cab is amall for a 1x15 cab too but that is WAY too expensive.

anyone have any experience with the cabs i mentioned above?

I've tried a Trace Elliot 4x10 cab and a combo with 2x10. For me Trace Elliots are associated with a lower mid presence, which for me are perfect for a Precision's thump.

The Mesa Boogie cab, is it the one with the black grill then? If so, that'll be the Diesel range. See you can find out whether on not they have EV (Electro-Voice) speakers in them. If so, get them! I had a 1x15 once, and I was amazed by the presence of the cab, but still retaining a piano like clarity to them.

^^ okay will do! i'll post a pic supposed to be in good shape i think i can talk the guy down to $250

i found a BASSON 2x10 cab for $350 that i think i'll go for but im sorta afraid that it will be too much money so i kinda need a backup plan.

i suggest a single 15" cab, used. it would do fine for pratice on it's own and, you could use it as a sub with your 8x10. Ampeg, if you can find one.

Definately agree. A quality 1x15 cab will be useful as both an extension (with an 8x10, MORE 10's start to get a bit redundant) as well as a compact option for practice and such.

I really want that 2x12 as well. It handles more power than my 85lb 2x10 + 1x15 enclosure, and it's lighter and higher quality.

God.... pass the Beano cuz I got GAS!

EDIT: THey don't ship to Canada.... BLAST!

I'm not looking for a cab to add to my 8x10 im looking for a cab for stand alone use. I need one that will sound good for rehersals

have you played the 2x12? or you just read about it?

my experience with 12'' bass speakers has not been that great.

how does the avator 2x10 sound? can you compare any of the cabs i listed above? for example say:
"well it does not sound as great as (bass cab) but it CERTINLY beats (bass cab)

I'm pretty sure I read every review of the 2x12 on Harmony Central and every review was amazing, the only bad comments were the tweeter was too loud and had to be turned down and...well.. I think that was it. I know someone in here has a 2x12 cabinet, but I don't think it is an Avatar.

Can anyone remember off the top of their heads?

Nah. Thing with TalkBass is that as long as you have enough patience and a big enough mug of coffee, you need never, ever post. TalkBass reminds me more of that peacock mating ritual where alpha males flutter their gigantic tail plumage rather than discuss bass.

It's fun to read, and a good resource if you dig deep enough, but it never struck me as a very "open" community.

To the TS: I say get an SVT18. Nothing pounds your gut like an 18, IMO. Later you can throw a 4x10 on it and have a nice stack that's very, very responsive to a 5 string bas.

^ umm i was planning on doing that eventually, stero my 8x10 and a 1x18 LATER.

but that is not what i want to do right now! i need a 2x10/1x15 with horn (4x10 would be nice but probably out of budget) for rehersals if i buy a 1x18 and use it as my only cab it will sound like farty poo.

It doesn't always sound so bad. I've used a 1x18 alone, and if you roll off the bass a little and boost the low mids you can get some nice growly tones. It's all preference, I guess. Whatever floats your boat.

lol yeah talk bass kinda reminds me of "my gear penius is bigger than your gear penius"

Anyways in over here in australia i saw a band and the bassist gigged with a hartke 15" with a tweeter and it sounded pretty good, said he paid 600 for it to so i dunno what that equates to in your real dollars

ive been eyeing an Orange 4ohm avatar B210 Neo the past couple of days..... it is sooo against what i would normally buy. normaly i would get an ampeg/mesa/fender but THE AVATAR COMES IN ORANGE IT DOES NOT FIGHT FAIR. i hopw i am not dissapointed with it later.... just i wont be able to test drive before i get it so thats my hang up.

cool colors are fun, but i'm thinkin' you need to get a cab that will compliment your exsisting cab, rather than just another rack of 10's. i'm so thinking sub woofer. a big ass 15" or 18". other than that line of thinking, i would probably look into a combo amp as a dedicated "practice" amp. tough choices! good luck.
#32
i dont want this cab to go with my 8x10 i'm happy with the 8x10 by itself~!! i neeed a cab that will sound great by itself because i plan on useing it by itself so a subwoofer is out.
