Yesterday I was watching TV and this group (singer + guitarist) came up on stage to do their thing. The song they played sounded EXCACLY like their radio version.

Performers playback a lot these days. I really don't understand why. Are they lazy ? are they scared to screw it up ?

I'd rather have somebody not performing at all.

so, how do you feel about it ?

Well. It depends on the group, lets say I HAD to sit through an artist that was crap live, i'd want them to use a recording just so it sounded better and my ears wouldnt hurt as bad.

But if i was going to the show of a live band with a great live reputation, muse for example, if they played a recording I would be angry as hell.

Who cares?

Unless you really love the band... in which case, you should stop loving that band, because anyone who playbacks a performance entirely probably doesn't have any musical credibility.
Or...
They were playing on a show like top of the pops and they were forced to lipsync?

Some shows force the music to be recorded. Top of the Pops famously only allowed their singers to perform live over recorded music except for one performance by The Who and two by Iron Maiden, where a few takes were recorded and the best one chosen.

If it was a live gig then it probably was them playing live I mean, the Killers sound identical to the CD live.

I seem to recall Nirvana refused to cooperate on one and mimed it really, really badly.

^^No, Cobain sang it extremely deeply and poorly, so yeah.

I'm glad TOTP is over.

Reminds me of a vid by RHCP,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtZFbX0PZ2o

first they have to record it, then play it live, but they just jump around
And what is more, there's been a bloody purple nose and some bloody purple clothes that were messing up the lobby floor. It's just apartment house rules so all you 'partment fools remember : one man's ceiling is another man's floor.

Holy **** that is classic. But did he do those vocals live?? Or were they actually what was chosen on the recording

I love where there's a bit towards the end where Grohl is just kinda swinging his arms around.

Haha look how freaking low Krist's bass is.

On a lot of tv shows they don't have the time to soundcheck. Or the show cba to get a good sound man, etc. at t4 on the beach they did it because they didn't have time to soundcheck all the bands apparently.

the Feeder drummer was spinning in circles on his seat and stuff, it was funny.

It annoys me 2!!... it takes the fun out of the music... if i went to see a band and they just put on a CD... id be pissed... only 1 band i saw have done that...

steps.... bad times

Thats a good idea. I'm off to see the Black Crusade tour, and Machine Head, Arch Enemy, Dragonforce and Trivium are playing.

I'm not a fan of Trivium's new stuff, so I'll ask them to play recordings, 'cos apparently they suck live.

Dammit I was just scrolling through the thread to make sure no-one had posted it so I could. Well it's a great vid, as is the Nirvana one.

Chris Wolstenhome and Dominic Howard actually swap instruments.
I play by my own rules. And I have one rule; There are no rules... but if there are, they're there to be broken. Even this one.

Confused? Good.

Oh man the Maiden and Muse ones are awesome. I hadn't realised they existed.

Found two more cool ones.

Oasis doing Roll with It on TOTP with Noel and Liam switching places not so secretly.

And another Muse one!

There seem to be a lot of Muse ones but some they take more seriously than others.
