I plug my guitar from the jack directly to the computer and try to record but apparently you're meant to have something in between the jack and the computer

my question to you guys is

what?

it should work, so i dono, i'd check to make sure the soudcard jack is working at all and check your digital input settings. But you should also get a preamp of some kind.

You need an amplifier mic'ed up to get a decent sound, unless you have crappy software like Amplitube.

If you just plug your guitar straight into your computer, you'll get just the sound of the guitar, which isn't pleasant.

ideally, you need an audio interface (put this into google), a microphone and an amplifier.
