My setup now is decent enough, but my amp really sucks. it's a Crate GLX65 and I hate it. I can get decent tone if i tweak my Boss GT-8 enough, but the amp always buzzes and sounds TERRIBLE when the volume is turned up past 5. I will be gigging soon, so I obviously need a better amp, but I also have a question: Do I have to get a large amp? or could i get a smaller, better sounding amp and just mic it when gigging? would any tone be lost by doing this?

btw, the amp I was going to get was a peavey XXX super 40

the peavey XXX is a tube amp. I won't be gigging at any very large places.

A 30 watt tube combo is fine for all but very large venues, and then you will be micing anyway. Solid state you're gonna need at least 100 watts.

The XXX should work for most bars to small-medium sized clubs as long as they can mic it. I say go for it!

I'd go something not too big but not too small, a 15 watt tube would do pubs and stuff, a 30 watt tube would do a larger venue and anything past that can be miced, I'd go Laney to be honets, great amps.

And you don't need a stack, combo are easier.

XXX is all you'll really need for a long timedefinitely loud enough un mic'd
