So hey guys, I was thinking about this the other day. I know a thread like this is made very often but hopefully mine will be slightly different. Why does everyone make fun of Green day and Nirvana for just playing powerchords and simple melodies, solos etc? Other bands that are famous play simple music too, Smashing Pumpkins has pretty simple music, AC/DC has pretty simple music. A lot of popular bands and artists have really really basic music but I don't see them getting made fun of or criticized. I am also in no way a giant fan of either one of these bands, I like them and I also understand they make simple music. So what are your opinions on this?

i agree, theres nothing wrong with brilliance in simplicity?

if anything, theres more skill in making a basic song popular than having to show off with 45 minute solos etc.

*thinks to self*

"and its not just because i suck and cant play 45 minute solos"

ahhh

^ Very true, and mostly just because.

it is true that AC/DC makes simple music, but angus young (spelling?) at least could play, like the intro to thunderstruck, and his solos were pretty good too. green day has no attention grabbing work, and thats why i hate them, but nirvana's ok, because they are at least original.
#7
in my opinion, nirvana was too good. thats why kurt died, they were too amazing. no one should be making fun of them, if you are you're probably ignorant. you should atleast respect them.

and green day....... there older stuff was really good and really important for that time period. like dookie. but im not a big fan of that new stuff, its just kinda stupid. they made too big of a change, you cant just jump into the whole political thing like that

The fact that you took that post seriously at all, despite the fact that I have Nirvana in my profile makes me sad..

Same can be said for anyone who took my post seriously in another thread about how Green Day should get Herman Li.

Oh, yes, because Thunderstruck is just the epitome of technical prowess.

I personally like Green Day and FOB, but I hate the hell out of most of their fans. I think that plays a large part in people's opinions, because if the mainstream likes them, a lot of people will reflexively hate them.

Listen I'm pretty sick of people making these threads and defending these bands from the big bad flamers. A lot of people honestly don't like there music just some people are more vocal about than others. I just don't like Green Day, never have, never will. Nirvana, for them I own Nevermind and their music just doesn't hit me like other music does. I just don't like them, they're not bad, maybe in my view they are, but if someone likes them then they must have done something right.

Don't act so surprised that the thread didn't get flamed because you posted a certain topic that is known to insight conflict in UG. Every thread I see of someone doing that then acting surprised they didn't get flamed, not everyone here is close minded so stop acting like we all live to flame these bands. Deal with the good, deal with the bad.

the second bit i agree with however, at least in principal that fans play a large part in a bands reputation,

it makes me sad that i missed that post....

i actually liked both bands when they came out if not slightly before they got big, it was the simplicty that made them good and attention grabing. they got big at a time when we were getting out of the hair metal era when stuff was bigger than life and blow outta proportion. people were sick of big hair and 9 hour solos that go nowhere and didnt serve the song. these bands were a reacyion to what was befor them, much like soloing and shread comming back into style is a reaction to nu-metal and pop-punk.
