not meanign to sound like a dickhead, but i thought heavy metal in its own right was a sub-genre itself and METAL is the overall Genre? i know im probably wrong, but thats just whats going through my head lol

What he said. The term "heavy metal" has often been misunderstood as being the less heavy kind of metal, but it's really mostly used about a special kind of metal. Exactly what defines heavy metal can be discussed, but I interpret it so that it's very much the same as thrash metal.
